What makes up
physical fitness?

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services'

Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2nd edition, 2018.

  • Aerobic Activity (a.k.a. endurance or cardio activity) to increase stamina

  • Muscle Strengthening (a.k.a. resistance training or weight lifting) to increase power

  • Bone Strengthening (a.k.a. weight-bearing or weight-loading) to promote bone growth/strength

  • Balance Activities to improve the ability to recover loss of balance that may result in falls

  • Flexibility Activities to increase ease of moving.

Children and adolescents (6-17 years) are recommended to do at least 1 hour of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity that includes aerobic, muscle and bone strengthening each day.

Adults benefit from at least 2.5 hours of moderate-intensity, or at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity spread out over the week. Moderately intense muscle-strengthening that involve all major muscle groups provide additional health benefits.

Older adults should incorporate activities that practice maintaining balance in addition to aerobic and muscle strengthening exercise. If limited in reaching the recommended weekly guideline because of chronic conditions, they should be encouraged to be as active as they can tolerate.
